Due to recent events, I find myself very interested in novels that handle the issue of break-ups of long term relationships. The best I've read to date is High Fidelity by Nick Hornby... it was like reading a book written by the pettiest version of myself and I loved it.
Anyone know any novels that deal with the issue of break-ups that handle the material in an especially engaging way?
No help with breakup novels though. I remember my last breakup being a time of personal creativity, I took it out on the paper, know what I mean?
Are you a Murakami fan? I've nearly finished The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, which, in a very strange way, tells the story of a man dealing with his wife leaving him for another (a lot of his novels are about people breaking apart).
His work is a little different from Mr. Hornby's.
You should check out The Marriage Plot.
"God-Shaped Hole" is sort of a break-up novel, but definitely covers the emotions and process.
"Candy" deals with a long-term break-up as well as drug addiction, so pretty intense.
"Paint It Black" deals with the death of a lover, which also touches closely on feelings associated with long-term relationship break-ups....
These are some good ones, I know there are more. Let me know what you think!
Candy was fucking great!
