Well, the first amendment in the Bill of Rights prevents the US government from backing a religion, say, by paying teachers and providing a setting for them to advocate a religion by mandating it's rites.
It's trickier in Canada, and I think it has more to do with Provinces there.

Theism is not a religion, that God can be Vishnu or the blind watchmaker, doesn't matter.
My problem with it (the money thing) isn't so much that they are 'shoving religion down people's throats' because who can say they felt legitimately dis-included by the words on the money they use to do coke? It isn't like the Lord's prayer in school thing where people are called out about how they exercise their faith, the Lord's prayer is connected to a very specific group of religions.
My problem with the money thing is that it's actually kind of blasphemous if you think about it. Putting "In God we Trust" on the slips of paper we use to pay for assassinations, wars, the stuff we rob and cheat each other to get. And on the middle of this testament to materialism and greed we remind ourselves "thank you spiritual and benevolent entity, because of my trust in you those damn labor unions will be shot by hired thugs. Your will be done." And you kind of make God implicit in the crimes committed by the US Dollar.
Oh, but you say, not everything you buy with money is fundamentally evil.

All that aside I'd like to point out that the phrase “separation of church and state” isn't in the Constitution of the United States of America, nor in any law passed by elected officials.

Not that phrase, exactly, but the first amendment is pretty clear about how religions are to be treated equally by the state.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" is how it is put there. Seems pretty clear cut. And the money thing isn't a violation, I never said it was. I said it was blasphemous, not illegal.

@nkw: To be fair, we pay for assasinations and wars in other ways, and we rob and cheat murder each other to get things besides federal reserve notes. I always took it to be faith in America's manifest destiny, in the result of the circulation of currency keeping the dollars value relatively stable. The idea that while, yeah, everybody is fucking up all over the place, we're still making marginal progress because it's God's Plan that America is THE SHIT. Which is crazy, sure, but not outright blasphemy imo.

Well, in defense of your poor mother, I can sort of see her point. You are a youngone and I can't say for certainty how I would feel if I came upon my teenage son writing these stories or talking to these people *looks around room*. Of course I like to think that being some sort of something liek a writer myself I would be totally cool...but who knows.
So my advice is to say "Yes mother." and try to be nice to her. Then do what you want anyway, within reason, and be safe and don't get caught out.

I can agree with Avery to an extent. I don't get mad or offended when people have that reaction to my writing. My mom read one of my stories (or tried to) and said she couldn't finish it. I take that as a compliment. It only means I'm doing what I intended with my writing. To provoke emotion. If you're provoking emotion...good job, embrace that.

This is what we call "making tea" in the industry. First, you boil your water in a kettle. You've gotta get it really hot, or otherwise it's shit. Once you've got smoke roiling off it, pour it over the tea leaves in your pot. Leaves must be loose, and you have a tablespoon of tea per person, plus one for the pot. If you're having chai, use assam, with cinnamon, cardomon and milk. If you're having Breakfast tea, leave it for as long as possible, so the tannin flavour builds up. Once the tea's ready, bring it to the table, and enjoy the age old 4pm British ritual, as you empty the remainder of the boiling water over the legs, arms and face of the captive you have tied to the chair.
