'Space Raptor Butt Invasion' and the Other Hugo Award Finalists
Tingle's tale of space exploration and dinosaurs from Earth 2 does, in fact, lead to one of the best dialog sequences ever committed to e-ink:
'I mean, it's not gay if it's a dude raptor and a dude human, right?' I ask.
'Totally not gay.' Says the dinosaur.
Of course, this nomination has brought up, once again, the specter of Sad Puppies.
Sad Puppies and Rabid Puppies are groups of individuals who, in 2013, started voting as a block and nominating a slate of books to win the Hugo that they felt were "unabashed pulp action that isn’t heavy handed message fic." Puppies were calling the Hugos "an affirmative action award" and claimed the awards were unfairly tilted towards fiction featuring female and non-white characters.
It was in 2015 that their effect was felt heavily. The nomination process for Hugos, currently under review for 2017, allowed the Puppies to fill the slate for many, many categories.
While Tingle's nomination may be the work of Puppies, so far it hasn't been confirmed by either Puppy group, and it would be a switch from their typical M.O., which involves nominating books they felt were overlooked as opposed to straight-up trolling.
For now, the only answer seems to be that people want to read about a man named Lance, a dino named Orion, and the ways they fill the void of space (and the void of Lance) with love (and dino anatomy).
And, as one can expect from Chuck Tingle, he's taking the whole thing in stride. He tweeted this image early Tuesday:
Good luck, Chuck. And for a full list of nominees, mosey on over this way, true buckaroo.
