Online Marketing Guru Gets $500,000 To Write Double-Douche Tell-All
Via Galleycat:
A 24-year-old online marketing director just landed a $500,000 book deal with Portfolio, an imprint of Penguin. Why is this exciting news?
Because Ryan Holiday's book is being sold as “an expose of modern news media and a primer on the dark arts and individuals that control it, with detailed and shocking revelations.” And among two of his clients are Dov Charney and Tucker Max.
For those of you who don't know of these two winners:
- Dov Charney is the founder and CEO of American Apparel. He reportedly enjoys sexually harassing his employees, as well as ordering unattractive employees to be fired.
- Tucker Max is the living, walking embodiment of "bro culture," a folk hero to guys who pound beers and chicks and then act like jerks about it.
My interest in this is totally voyeuristic. In this situation (first book, no name recognition), a writer wouldn't get a $500,000 deal without there being something scandalous in the offering.
Anyway, such are the trials and travails of the publishing industry. Pour your heart into a literary novel; toil in obscurity until the end of time. Write a tell-all book about a bunch of morons; be lavished with gifts. It's encouraging, isn't it?
And there's your gossip news item for today.

Nice Rob.
Hmmm, perhaps I shall start muckraking to pay the bills and purchase a nice manse.
There's not much scandalous about Tucker Max that hasn't already been said. He tells about all the jerkwad things he does in his books.
This sounds like frat boy lit.
I fucking hate my Book being compared to Tucker Max, but I suppose his shit sold well, so I can't blame the publishers peddling any revenue seam they can. But it is such a fuck.
Sounds a shit book though.
Max really started a genre... Fratire?
