UPDATE: Hitchhiker Shot While Researching Memoir Entitled 'The Kindness of America'

Hitchhiker Shot Researching Memoir'The Kindness of America'

UPDATE: Ugh. Turned out the guy shot himself. Probably so the media attention would get him a book deal. What a jerk. I hate the internet.

Raymond Dolin of West Virginia is hitchhiking around the country while writing a memoir, entitled The Kindness of America.

He's met at least one person who wasn't very kind. Specifically, Charles Lloyd Danielson III, who shot Dolin in the arm while the 39-year-old writer was waiting for a ride by the side of Highway 2 in Montana on Saturday night.

Police arrested Danielson, and charged the 52-year-old with felony assault with a weapon and driving under the influence. The injury was non-life-threatening, and Dolin is recovering.

It appears as though there was no motive for the crime; Danielson and Dolin had no prior interaction.

Director John Waters is working on a similar project--hitchhiking to write a book--though I'm suddenly a lot more interested in Dolin's memoir.
