Concept Art and Set Photos From Tom Twyker and The Wachowski Siblings' 'Cloud Atlas' Adaptation

David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas is one of my favorite books, one which I place firmly in the "unfilmable" category. So naturally my knee jerked hard enough to hit me in the chin when I heard they were attempting to make a movie out of it. You see, the book is comprised of a sextet of stories structured like a Russian nesting doll staring at its own reflection. Each section is presented as a historical document in the one that follows, acting as a thematic through line. It is a pastiche of genres, encompassing everything from high seas adventure to post-apocalyptic sci-fi. Each section would make a fine film on its own, but the novel as a whole would be better suited as a mini-series.

I was intrigued when Tom Twyker was brought on board to direct, but then dismayed when it was revealed he would be sharing those duties with the Wachowskis. And I wasn't too thrilled with the casting, either. Tom Hanks and Halle Berry? The careers of both have gone steadily down hill after each won their respective Oscars- Hanks a wheelbarrow full for various films and Berry for having wildebeest sex with Billy Bob Thorton in the overrated Monster's Ball.

But enough griping. I intend to further explore the unfilmability of Cloud Atlas at a future date. This post is about the first conceptual art and on set photos to emerge from the production. It doesn't give us much to go on, but I'm sure this is only the beginning. Click through to Hancinema for the full set.
