'Cloud Atlas' Author David Mitchell Is Big In China
via Wall Street Journal:
Cloud Atlas author David Mitchell is big in China--he recently got mobbed in Shanghai by fans seeking autographs.
According to the Wall Street Journal:
One particularly determined man even blocked Mr. Mitchell’s path and, slapping a life-size portrait of the writer on the hood of a parked car, shouted in English: “Sign! Sign!”
A startled Mr. Mitchell sheepishly obliged, leaning over the car to scrawl his name in black marker across his own forehead.
The book was only recently translated to Chinese. One fan said the book's popularity might be due to its "melding of contemporary British literature with themes that resonate in China." Another suggested it's just the economics of publishing--what gets chosen for translation is simply what the marketplace demands.
I need to read this book!
In case you haven't seen the extended trailer for the upcoming film based on the book (which I've watched, like, 20 times), here it is:

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Love this book, can't wait for the movie.
I liked the beginning of the trailer.
