So I introduced myself in the Introduction Thread but I figure since this will be the area most of you will get to know me, I'll introduce myself here too.

My name is Pete... obviously.  A lot of you will probably know me from The Cult (PGoutis).  I guess a site dedicated to reading and writing should have a book club.  Dennis and a few of the other guys discussed it (so I hear) and I was asked to run it since I kind of have experience with it at The Cult.

We talked about it being "tied in" more to the site.  Trying to schedule book discussions to coincide with interviews or reviews.  Maybe be able to drive traffic back and forth a little that way.  I don't know.  I think an advantage here will be that we should have success with a bigger range of literary genres and styles.

We're still gonna be taking suggestions about things, so feel free to comment here.

I see that you guys were already starting something for this month.  That's great!  I hope you guys pick Nik's book because (a) he's a kick ass writer, and (b) I've been meaning to read that one for a while - it's sitting right next to my bed actually.

So, yeah, definately keep that one going for now.

Next month's book will be announced soon.  In another thread.

Yay Pete!

pete: i would like to see us read as many up-and-coming as well as unknown authors/books as we can. of course this is my leaning, and i dont expect everyone to feel that way, but i think theres a lot of great authors we could help out with a bomb of orders. James Bernard Frost has a book coming out in april, that i've heard snippets of at readings and, i think other people would share my love for it.

of course i realize this probably also should have some mainstream reading to get people in the door, at least, and im in no way against that happening.

what are your thoughts?

@Charles: I love that idea!  You know I've always been about getting books from small presses and first books from authors read.  That was mostly my goal with The Cult's book club.  I think with this one things will have to be a little more mixed up.  Like we won't have a "Transgressive" book or a "rookie author" every month.  This is also why I want to run this book club (at least for now) month by month - so I can continue to get feedback from staff and members alike.

And after writing all that, and agreeing with you about everything, I hope you're not disappointed by November's book - which is from a pretty successful author.  But it does tie in with some stuff and hopefully will drum up some traffic.  So I think it is an important book to do.

are we not doing stay god, then? because i figured that would be november, since some people expressed interest in, or had yet to finish THE SAMARITAN. myself included.

Dennis should be PM'ing you Chuck.  I think we can hold off on the book we decided on until December.  You guys can go through with whatever book you decide on (with LitReactor's backing) for November.

So, whether you decide on Stay God or The Zero (which is what I think it's between, right?) we'll support it for November.

as punishment for not consulting him, pete has (im under the impression) left me in control of the book club for STAY GOD. i've never led a damn thing in my life so please go easy on me. i have, though, asked author Nik Korpon to join us in any way he sees fit, and to hold a Q/A later in the month. he has agreed.

you can get his book at the link below in both paper and e-reader format. if you have something besides kindle, you can download a program called calibre and convert it to e-pub. i have used it myself. it works fine, but the pagination doesnt always match up.

Stay God is a very interesting book and a fine choice for a book club pick. Korpon cranks the paranoia up so well. Was a fun read.

Stay God ordered.

It seems a good read but I'll have to wait a couple of weeks before I can get my brains on it.

Glad to be part of the mob. All in!

I've never done a book club, but I've always wanted to give it a shot, and hey, a $2.99 book for my Kindle seems like an appropriate starter.

So how does this work? When do we start, where will we talk, etc?

Hey Charles,

Actually, can you PM me about this?  I'd like to keep a more structured order for the first book club entry.  Got some ideas for ya.

Can't wait to see what you guys have planned for this. The Cult's book club threads have already provided me with so many interesting reads. Long may it continue.

Also - a lot of interest in this thread already. Good stuff. Hopefully that means a more populated club when November rolls around.

Congrats to Charles and Pete. Good to hear you have got Nik onboard. He wrote me a review/edit for a story of mine that went up at Dirty Noir a little while - a really nice, friendly guy. Also, anyone who enjoys Stay God should be made aware there is a free collection of Baltimore-related noir-esque stories you can get from his website.
