I personally have not read any of the Sandman comics, yet, but I thought this announcment was cool.

I've not read it either but I agree, pretty cool. It's on my ever growing list of things to read.

Holy shit.  That's exciting.  Sandman as a whole is the greatest work of English literature I've ever read.

I love that man. I could listen to him read forever, and there's always a sparkle in his eyes. I used to think he was the writer I wanted to be. Now I know better... but he'll always be a huge inspiration.

I have all the Absolute Sandman volumes except for the very last, which I'm not even sure is out yet, and I have all the material in it in individual volumes anyway. Amazing stuff. I don't know if I'd call it the greatest work of English lit I've read, but there's no denying that it's way up there, and that it's far more than just some comic books.

Defnitely will enjoy seeing what there is to come.

And Limbless, Otis... do yourselves a favor and read some Sandman. Seriously, you won't regret it.

I dunno how I feel about this, I mean at some point it's just George Lucas remasting STAR WARS, isn't it? And since so much of SANDMAN was a DC marketing machine, anyway, can we even go that far?

I don't know what any of that means.

Neil is one of my favourite authors ever. Sandman is on my growing to read list.

I love Sandman, I kind of wish it was about the new Sandman though. Or that Delirium makes a cameo, I love her.

@Charles - If we were talking about Lucas sure. But we're talking about Gaiman. The man did such an amazing, epic run on Sandman that I'll read anything else he wants to write there. It's not like Sandman is his one-trick. The dude is a huge author with a a catalog of great work. So yeah, I'll read whatever he writes. PLUS! He's teaming up with JH Williams for art. Williams' art is fan-fucking-tastic. I actually started reading Batwoman because his shit is so tight.

I mean look this. click to embiggin

Yeah, I'm with Kirk. Gaiman isn't a hack who screws with prior material just because he has nothing better to do. And this is new work, not a rehash of old work. I expect great things.

He's also played a little in the Sandman universe since finishing Sandman, and those were good.  Endless Nights and The Dream Hunters.

I can't wait for a Sandman sale on Comixology.  Seeing those panels in full screen is going to be amazing.  The art has so much hiding in it.

And I agree about Williams.  I bought Batwoman: Elegy because of that art.  Good story, great art.

Yeah, thanks for posting that art. I'm not enough of a comic regular to place the name, but those two pages up there are stunning.

@Kirk: for the art alone, I'll stand corrected, unless I'm proven right early next year, which I hope I'm not, by the way. I'm just saying it kinda sounds like a cash grab, since now SANDMAN is a sort of cult thing. It's also taught in college classes, since the 'graphic novel' has gained some acceptance as a kind of literature.

I didn't mean to say that I didn't enjoy reading the original series.

Sandman has been a 'cult' thing for years-pretty much since it got released.

I absolutely plan on gettting started. I'm trying to figure out if I should a) buy them (which gets expensive) b) see if I have a buddy who owns them and will loan them (I only have one friend in the area who reads graphic novels) or c) go to the library to borrow them (which supplies are limited and now that there's a new one on the horizon, may pique interest and mean delays on my end).

I've heard nothing but great things about the series. So I do think if I decided to buy, it's not a bad investment. For those who own, do you find yourselves reading them again? Also, what is a good, affordable collection? I don't need the super duper latest & greatest hardbound with a bunch of extras - just the stories. What's a good bang for the buck?

Michael J. Riser's picture

Absolutely they're worth reading again. I owned them all in paperback and ended up getting the Absolute Sandman volumes. Gave the paperbacks to my ex-wife since she was a big fan right along with me. The big hardbound Absolute volumes aren't really even that expensive online.

Now that you could consider a cash grab, Charles. Purely luxury items. I don't really get where you're coming from at all, though. I see no reason for Gaiman to engage in anything like that, and he doesn't tend to sign on for anything he doesn't believe in. I don't know who suggested the idea originally, but I have no doubt that he and the artist will do something great.

Back on topic to Otis's question: the paperbacks you can get pretty cheap online, apparently, but I don't know what it works out to total. I think there are 11 of them?

You could always just try to grab the first volume or two from the library and see if you want to make the investment, but I can pretty much tell you that you'll like them. I never read them until much later because I wasn't so fond of the art. Like if you just pick up a random volume and start reading, it's hard to know what to make of it. But read from the beginning, you're almost guaranteed to find lots to like. It starts off a bit more comic-booky and gets more literary as it goes. There are some really wonderfully little pieces in there that aren't part of story arcs.

Speaking of, I need to sell off all my paperbacks. I don't have any reason to have them after I got the Absolute run. If there a better place than eBay to sell books/comics?

Just re-read the entire SANDMAN run last year and was lamenting its absence. Can't wait for this. Great world, great storyteller, and the best comic news of the year unless Moore says he'll do another Swampy run.

I did work out a very friendly LitReactor deal with Kirk who sent me his trades (thanks again, Kirk). I finished the first book last night and got started on the second one. I'm really enjoying it so far - and I know how these things work - the deeper you go, the better it gets.

JRJ - reminds me, I need to pick up the Swamp Thing run too, another list of books on my "to-buy" list.
