I've written a few stories where very bad stuff happens, and I have had trouble finding suitable magazines to submit them to.

To give you some idea, I'd guess most of you are familiar with Chuck Palahniuk's writing, and perhaps his short story, Guts: http://chuckpalahniuk.net/features/shorts/guts

If you had a story in that vein, and you weren't a well-known author (thus Playboy wouldn't consider you), what magazines would you submit to?  Preferably professional rate, or at least well-respected markets.

Hello--I've been trying to answer this question for myself quite a bit the past couple years, and I still don't have an answer. Is there any particular genre you're writing in? Horror markets seem to be an easier sell regarding that kind of content

It's pretty much general fiction. Could qualify as a thriller, but it is mostly a coming-of-age story.
