I was thinking and noticed 'damned' (both meanings) and 'hell' don't have words that properly take their places.  I know you could write 'doomed to hades' or whatever but that seems forced in a way 'had sex' or 'slept with' doesn't.  Are there any other curses/impolite words you can't really replace easily in English?

I run into this a lot, but no examples come to mind right now.

I have noticed that in TV shows where "fuck" isn't allowed, it's almost exclusively replaced with "goddamn."  The Shield, I noticed, did this a LOT.  The more I heard it, and noticed it (oops, can't erase knowledge!), the sillier it sounded.

But then, I'd say pretty much all swear words don't really have good replacements if they're really called for.  I'm trying to avoid them in my current WIP and sometimes a "godammit!" or something just fits.

I should have a page of non-swearing examples, but I never remember them after the fact...

Depends on the word.

"Consequences be damned." vs "These damned mosquitoes." vs "Sinners are damned."
Different uses and implications.

"Fuck the consequences." vs "These fucking mosquitoes." vs "Sinners are fucked."
More similar, unless the mosquitoes are actually having intercourse.

Interesting.  But I was thinking more words that have 'technical' meanings, and those can't be replaced.  Like 'damned', in the religious sense, can't really be replaced by 'shit'.

These godforsaken questions ...

Yeah, I should stop it.  Not like we are on a writing site and I'm asking about words or anything... oh wait.

... and then he saw what I did there. And it was good.

Oh I got it before, but I was trying to skip the conversation about how good a fit it was.  How was the trivia thing?

We were ruling the school for most of it, but fell behind in the end. Damned history questions… Fun, though, regardless. And they had vintage video games and very decent pizza.

Waiiiiit a second.

"Hell" and "damned" aren't actually curse words when used in the religious sense.  If you are damned, you're condemned to Hell, it's all very "technical" and accurate.

It can be both.  "Damn you to Hell X!"
