@Matt: I don't plan to take mine too literally, and neither should you if you don't feel it's right. I think on these you should write enough that a reader can see how you were inspired by the prompt. If a character just mentions that he used to be a combat medic, even if you're telling a romantic tale, that's enough for me."

Works for me. Now to figure out where it wants to go. Gonna be fun, Dino! Looking forward to seeing yours.

Same, Matt. Excited to see what this prompt generates!

Glad to make Averydoll's day.

Not so good yet. Got the germ of a story, but haven't put word-one down on paper yet. You?

I'm up to do another flash fiction battle, if anyone is interested. One week, anonymous polls. Who's game?

Matt Attack's picture

I'd be up for it once I finish with Mr Dino. It'll be a WAR rematch man!

Haha! Matt, I read that as "once I FINISH Mr. Dino."

Haha! Matt, I read that as "once I FINISH Mr. Dino.""

That's what she said? BA-----ZING!

Also, I've gotten about halfway through two different stories and scrapped them both, so I fully expect to get my ass kicked with this one, unless I can pull a Tebow.....ya know, play terribly and then make up for it by scrambling at the last second.

I got jokes today.

Matt Attack's picture

29th? Yeah. Should be.

In preperation, JR will play this.

Cool, Matt. Looking forward to it. Are we starting on the 29th, immediately after your polls go up, or after votes are in?

Matt Attack's picture

We could. You said this was flash? So one week, 1200 word limit?

Sound's picture
Sound from Azusa, CA is reading Greener Pastures by Michael Wehunt June 25, 2013 - 12:02pm

I thought flash limit was 1000, but we can do 1200.

Renfield's picture

I got a lot of lines laid down last week but no stories finished. Think I might try a "7 stories in 7 days" sort of thing, because that sounds a lot less insane than 31 stories for July, and I don't know if that's even human. So 7 for 7, anyone want to do that sometime? Doesn't have to be a battle I guess, more like an adventure.

Sound's picture

Renfield's picture

Some week in July I expect. Do like a little mini-nano, but with shorts/flash of course, and some sort of prompt aggregation.

Dino Parenti's picture

@Matt: At least you got something written! I've been jotting down a bunch of notes and I think I know what direction I'm going in, but I don't have word-one on paper yet in terms of actual story. I believe it is I who may get my ass royally handed to me. Btw, what time on Saturday are these due? I'm on the left coast, but eastern time rules here since we're getting these over to Jon to put up.

Jonathan Riley's picture

I'm on central time. So does Noon Central/10:00A.M Pacific/1:PM Eastern work for you guys and I can get it posted early afternoon. Or if you want an evening deadline we can go with that. So long as I have them before midnight on Saturday my time works for me so I can get them up before the days end!

Dino Parenti's picture

Jonathan Riley's picture

That works great for me. Gives me plenty of time to set up the poll. 11p.m. central standard time it is. So from west to mountain to central to east it goes like this. 9p.m. 10p.m. 11p.m. 12.pm.

@Ren & Sound - If I understand this I want in as well. We are going for 'Who is stupid enough to do this?' and not 'Who wrote the best story?', quantity over quality right?

If so how about the 14th through the 20th? I know of Forth of July (American public holiday) celebrations are the weekend before and after.

As an aside, can we start all listing at least our nations? I think Ren is British, but I'm not sure and if you are in Kalamazoo I'll feel a bit silly.

@Reily - It is stupidly more complicated then that thanks to Az. and Daylights saving time, so there are exceptions to that. This link shows the actual time in different locations in the U.S. which I've found a neat tool for writing.

Matt and Jon: There's a chance I may have to back out of this match, though I'm gonna try to crank out something by tonight. I'm suddenly part of an impromptu wedding in Santa Barbara (not mine!), and I'm leaving tomorrow morning and coming back Sunday, and I'm not sure when/if I'll have any time to write, or even if I'll have wifi access. I think though that I can get something in by tonight, though it'll likely suck. I will let you all know for sure by tomorrow morning.

Matt Attack's picture

That sucks, but it is good too I guess! Yay wedding? I hate them personally, but some people love them. Let us know man. I am nearly done with mine, but want to polish! I'd hate to leave it as is.

Anyone want to fill in if Dino can't finish? Same prompt and word count? Or Dino, would you be willing to keep it going if we extend the due date?

Dino Parenti's picture
Dino Parenti from Los Angeles is reading Everything He Gets His Hands On June 27, 2013 - 10:40am

Don't get me wrong--I totally want to do this! I'm gonna bust my ass to get something done by tonight, but if you're willing, I'd totally be up for an extension. Say by Tuesday by 9pm PST at the latest? This way I can work half the day Monday on a pressing project, then have the evening to finish/polish. That said, I also don't want to prolong these things longer than they need to be, though right now there don't seem to be any other battles going. What say you and Jon?

Jonathan Riley's picture
Jonathan Riley from Memphis, Tennessee is reading Flashover by Gordon Highland June 27, 2013 - 11:05am

That's fine by me so long as you both agree. I want them by Tuesday 9pm PST 11pm CST

If I for some reason am asleep by then I'll post the poll first thing Wed. morning. But I should be up.

Dino Parenti's picture

Strange Photon's picture

Renfield, if you're out there, and not overly burdened currently, I still owe you a battle. So sorry about being a major flake. With all that was going on in April and May, I was just not a very reliable person. Now, things are calmed down (slightly) so if you're still able to do a battle, I challenge thee to give me the ass whupping I so clearly deserve. If you accept, I say one and done, 4k limit, and we can work out the details of date and who makes the poll later. Plus, we'll need a new prompt. If Renfield doesn't respond/is busy/wants me dead, then I could use someone else to battle.

Sound's picture

Strange Photon's picture

Cool. Not sure how long I should give him, or if I should just assume that he's probably sick of dealing with me because I was REALLY flaky the last time we tried to battle.

Sound's picture
Sound from Azusa, CA is reading Greener Pastures by Michael Wehunt June 27, 2013 - 3:58pm

Haha, I'm sure he'll be along shortly. Maybe we can do another threeway battle.

Strange Photon's picture
Strange Photon from Fort Wayne, IN is reading Laurie Anderson lyrics June 27, 2013 - 4:51pm

I might not have a problem with that. The only downside is that my chances of victory drop from 50/50 to 1/3, and despite my trouble with fractions, even I can recognize those are worse odds!

Of course, a victory in a literary battle has no actual value other than ego stroking, so I guess a threeway would be perfectly fine.

Dino Parenti's picture
Dino Parenti from Los Angeles is reading Everything He Gets His Hands On June 27, 2013 - 5:37pm

May I submit this image as the prompt for this potential three-way?

Dwayne's picture
Dwayne from Cincinnati, Ohio (suburbs) is reading books that rotate to often to keep this updated June 27, 2013 - 6:38pm

@Dino - The ideal is to wait until after the person has accepted to minimize giving anyone an advantage in seeing the prompt early since it is assumed that those who issued a challenge will be looking for the reply.

Dino Parenti's picture

Strange Photon, Matt the Garcia and Ren; should be kind of fucking epic can't wait to read them.

Strange Photon's picture
Strange Photon from Fort Wayne, IN is reading Laurie Anderson lyrics June 28, 2013 - 4:26am

Should we send Renfield a message or just wait for him to come to us? He's probably reading these but is too polite to tell me to fuck off. We had a battle going awhile back and I flaked out. Twice. So, I understand his hesitancy. OR... he's just not as big a loser as me and has other things in life besides his computer.

Renfield's picture
Renfield from Hell is reading 20th Century Ghosts June 28, 2013 - 8:29am

I think I might already be the most flaky person in the history of this thread for no other reason than being lazy/absent-minded so I don't think it would bother me if anyone else where just a little bit flaky.

But yes, a three-pronged battle would be cool.
