@J.Y. I appreciate the challenge offer and wish I could join you in battle but I just have too much on my plate right now so I'll have to respectfully decline. 'd like to take a rain check though.  Maybe a few weeks down the road.

If anyone wants to accept a battle with J.Y. in my place, have at it.

Thanks,

Jonathan

@J.Y.: If you're still up for some conflict, I'd like to step in for Jon and take your challenge if you're up for it. I've got a few days now between finishing stories that I can fill with an impromptu battle. What say you?

Strange Photon's picture

I'm being of very little help here, seeing as waiting around twiddling thumbs is the primary activity and bureaurocrazy is making funeral arrangement next to impossible at the moment - and even if it wasn't we can't have one till family is here from overseas which is another bureaucratic cluster fuck at the moment - so it looks like I might as well use my time writing.

Renfield, if you're still interested in our battle, how about I get something to you by tomorrow night, then you can make the poll. Is that ok? If you don't want to go ahead with this, I totally understand.

Alright, Dino. It's on. One week. 100,000 words max, hard limit.

Someone drop a prompt.

PROMPT: The apple does nothing but rot.

Also, I forfeited my battle with Emily, so no girl fight this week): I passed out after school and totally missed the deadline.

Sweet.

PROMPT Addendum:

A Poison Tree
By William Blake 1757–1827

I was angry with my friend;
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe:
I told it not, my wrath did grow.

And I waterd it in fears,
Night & morning with my tears:
And I sunned it with smiles,
And with soft deceitful wiles.

And it grew both day and night.
Till it bore an apple bright.
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that it was mine.

And into my garden stole,
When the night had veild the pole;
In the morning glad I see;
My foe outstretched beneath the tree.

@J_my: So due on monday the 29th, "100,000" word limit. Already sparring...

jyh's picture
jyh from VA is reading whatever he feels like April 23, 2013 - 9:04am

hard limit of 100K = no effective word limit

If you manage to write a novel by the 29th, I'll vote for you no matter what.

Dino Parenti's picture

Though I have a tendency to overwrite at times, a novel ain't happening by the 29th. Otherwise, cool with me. Good luck.

Incidentally, since this is my first Thunderdome battle, who do I send the story to or where do I post when it's done? Also, will the fact that my subscription expired a few weeks back have any affect on this? Just don't want to waste anyone's time.

Thanks.

jyh's picture

I don't have a subscription right now either, which only means we can't make a private poll. You can email the story to me, or I to you. PM me with an address and preference.

Will do. I prefer a public poll anyway.

I didn't have my story finished. I totally fucked up and thought I'd have time to finish it when I got home, but instead, I slept. Fuck me.

EDIT: Okay, I'm totally retarded, I thought Em had posted here. She emailed me. /facepalm

^ ha :)

Ah no problem, I wrote a story I really quite like out of our quote, which is the main reason I wanted to do thunderdome anyway.

There is a Random Prompt thread HERE

So I really love the last two prompts that Renfield posted. I challenge thee "anyone who accepts" to a flash Thunderdome battle 500-1000 words on the picture with the Masked shotgun holder. A four day battle. Anyone game?

Also,

I so want that picture of the woman jumping in the bakery to be a THunderdome battle as well. Any two takers?

Come on people. These prompts are gold.

JR ~ I'm game. I'm really busy, but oh I had the inkling of an idea that wouldn't leave and so...

Shotgun girl 500 - 1000. Four days. Anonymous battle.

GAME ON :)

We all three write a story on the shotgun prompt.

Oh yes I'm enjoying this one :D

I'm headed to St. Louis on Thursday for the Books and Booze meetup and won't be back home until a week from Sunday, maybe if I have time after that, Or if you want to, maybe you can find someone else to do the lady one with you sooner. I really want to read those stories!

Working on something currently, but think a little healthy competetion wouldn't hurt either!!!!

Who's game? Standard Thunderdome is fine with me, but since some of you are headed to Books and Booze (and since I am bowing out for various reasons) I'd be willing to extend the first draft deadline by a week.

Anyone interested? Shall we begin?

Dino Parenti's picture

Matt,

I'd be up for a quick Thunderdome if we keep it to 1,000 words or less. Prompt is up to you or anyone else. I pick horrible ones.

Matt Attack's picture
Matt Attack from Richmond, Va. is reading As I Lay Dying, William Faulkner June 15, 2013 - 1:15pm

DINO! What's going on, man? Long time, no talk.

I'd be down, but you don't want to go for the full thunderdome experience? 2500k limit? Also, someone has to pick the prompt, it's just the way BTD works, so we're good there.

Renfield's picture
Renfield from Hell is reading 20th Century Ghosts June 15, 2013 - 2:21pm

How do you feel about this as a prompt?

Dino Parenti's picture
Dino Parenti from Los Angeles is reading Everything He Gets His Hands On June 15, 2013 - 6:57pm

Matt,

I'm good with the 2.5k limit. Won't guarantee that I'll write that much, but my luck, my first draft will be 4k! Man, that's a crazy-tough prompt above, but I'm game if you are. What say you, Matt? When do you suggest the deadline be?

Jonathan Riley's picture
Jonathan Riley from Memphis, Tennessee is reading Flashover by Gordon Highland June 15, 2013 - 7:30pm

Dino and Matt,

If you guys don't currently have memborships and don't want to run it through the workshop first you can do what seems to be popular in thunderdome battles these days and one of you can post an anonymous poll. If you guys don't know how to, I can tell you or you can send the stories to me and I'd do it for ya. Anyway, good luck. That prompt looks ridicuoulously hard. I'm imagining Full-Metal Jacket meets Rambo meets M.A.S.H.

Dino Parenti's picture

I'm no longer a member. I'm good with sending them to you if Matt is. Thanks for offering. Yeah, tough prompt! I've got all kinds of crazy images flowing right now, but no actual ideas.

Matt Attack's picture

I am down gents and we'll hold off a week submitting a final in honor of Books and Booze in St. Louis next weekend. So final due on the 29th. 25k limit. No review process? Just a final?

I'd be cool sending them to you JR, thanks for the help. Plus I still need to work on the column for Parable Press!

Tough prompt Ren, but I'll make it work. I did a War prompt once before against Averydoll, ages ago. I want to say it was about kids or something? I remember using a lot of similies. It didn't go well.

Let's get it on!

Dino Parenti's picture

We're on then for the 29th! Good luck, Matt. I assume you meant 2.5k there instead of 25k:)

Dino Parenti's picture
Dino Parenti from Los Angeles is reading Everything He Gets His Hands On June 16, 2013 - 11:45am

And yes, I think just a final without review would do. Damn this prompt! Great prompt, Ren!

Renfield's picture

I thought it was a tough photo too, but it obviously wants to be a fiction. There's enough going on there that I'm sure some liberties can be taken without losing that there gestalt of it. I just need some good stories to read in my life currently.

Dino Parenti's picture
Dino Parenti from Los Angeles is reading Everything He Gets His Hands On June 16, 2013 - 2:09pm

Actually, I do have a sick idea for this prompt, but I worry that not even 5k words may be enough to pull it off.

Sound's picture

It's beast-mode. I am just worried about how literal it needs to be.

We're on then for the 29th! Good luck, Matt. I assume you meant 2.5k there instead of 25k:)"

Good luck yourself! 2500 words! I suppose a novella would be alright, but yeah, no. Haha

Dino Parenti's picture
Dino Parenti from Los Angeles is reading Everything He Gets His Hands On June 17, 2013 - 10:38am

@Matt: I don't plan to take mine too literally, and neither should you if you don't feel it's right. I think on these you should write enough that a reader can see how you were inspired by the prompt. If a character just mentions that he used to be a combat medic, even if you're telling a romantic tale, that's enough for me.

Michael.Eric.Snyder's picture
Michael.Eric.Snyder June 17, 2013 - 11:29am

Ok. So I just read the latest posts in this thread and looked at the prompts and wrote something based on the shotgun prompt. I guess I was in the mood to write. Can we make it a foursome? Or is that just simply too kinky for Lit Reactor?

After I inadvertantly trashed flash fiction and trampled some feelings and made an accidental ass of myself a few months ago here on the forums, I thought maybe, too, I could lose to you three in my first sort of thunderdome battle experience. What say you?

A storm has knocked out my WiFi and 4g. I was able to drive up the rode but its out at mcdonalds and starbucks too. I was able to post this from my phone but I can't access my emails right now. My story is done and if the storm clears before midnight central time(3 hours from now) I hope to have the poll up in time. If not it may be morning before I can post it. Sincere apologies. --Jonathan--
